I received a lot of discussion on a recent post to Linkedin that posed the following question: What do you feel are the biggest challenges facing golf business and the golf industry in 2011?
This discussion is for contributions on solutions/ideas/thoughts:
One of the resurfacing topics was a lack of rounds played and need to reach out to new golfers and teach them the game.
Reaching out to our Junior Golfers has been a priority on mine and fellow PGA Professionals as they are the future of the game of golf. So far, I believe this has been a tremendous success throughout our country.
As far as increasing our current number of rounds played per day...well that is a challenge. Even before our troubling economic times, golf rounds have continually decreased over time. The answer may lie with the fact that golfers have less time to spend playing golf. People wish and are required to spend more time with friends and family. They don't have 5-6 hours of their day to leave the house or office to play golf. This has been a huge issue that our industry suffers from and PGA Professionals have been trying to find a solution for. Unfortunately, only unorthodox ideas have been discussed. I would be happy to hear if anyone else has some better ideas. Some of these unconventional ideas include the following: Shortening the golf courses not making them harder; Changing golf from 18 holes to 12 holes.
